  • Help on laptop purchase

i stumbled on this site trying to find comparisons of processors that are being used in budget laptops. so I'm looking for some help with that.

looking at getting a simple laptop from best buy or circuit city say under $700. but i want the most bang for my buck. i know RAM is the stresser but initially i was trying to find out which is the better processor between the AMD Turion™ 64 X2 mobile technology TL-58, Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core mobile processor T2330, and AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 dual-core processor TK-57/TK-55. the kid at best buy tried to tell me the turion, in general, is better than the athlon but from the charts on this site it looked like the athlon group was ranking higher.

i'd like to use my laptop for things like basic surfing, word processing, to possible gaming (age of empires, nothing too heavy), porn , lite movie editing with pinnacle movie studio, and possible music production. music would primarly be hooking up turntables with a line in and just recording it. not too much more than that. i would probably revert back to XP instead of keeping vista because i hear it is slow with 1G of RAM.

best buy had a dell inspirion 1521 with a AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 dual-core TK-55 (think 1.6/1.8GHz), 1 G RAM (i'd eventually bump up), about 120G HD, vista (revert to XP). it was $550. which i thought was a good deal for those specs.

also, does the laptop itself matter minus the hype of the guts? i'd prefer dell just b/c i'm used to the functions on my work dell laptop. but i like toshiba too.

    Suggestions...Help please...Thanx in advance

The T23xx chips are very marginally faster than the TL-58. But the difference is small and would vary from one application to the next. So I would look at the other specs and price to make a decision.
