  • MS Storage Spaces Performance Config for hosting Hyper-V VM’s

    Hi all,

I was hoping to get some advice on what the minimum performance metrics would need to be on MS storage space drive for Hyper-V. This drive to host multiple VM’s. ( I am aware this may be difficult to answer due to different types of VM’s and applications that run within them )

Our test is running on below server.

    Dell R730XD Server – 3.5” 12 Bay
    Dual Intel Xeon E5-2690 V4 – 14 Core
Dell Broadcom 5720 Quad Port 1GB NDC
    256GB RAM
    H730/1GB RAID Controller –
1 x Dell Samsung PM1725a PCI 1.6TB NVMe SSD Drive
    3 x ST16000NM001G Seagate Exos X16 3.5" 16000 GB Serial ATA III drives in NON-RAID Model

Storage Space drive setup = 1 x NVME, 2 x 16GB Mechanical VD = Mirror – no tiering. ( we found Tiering so much slower on CDM Tests )

We are just not sure these speeds will be adequate for running multiple virtual machines.
Also, is there a specific recommended setup on CDM for testing drives that would be hosting virtual machines.

We don't provide support for Crystal Disk Mark. You might want to contact the author of that software if you have questions about the results or settings.

As for what speed you will find acceptable. That is only a question you can answer. Except for backups / archives I wouldn't use a HDD for anything now. But that just my preference and my budget. I don't know yours.
