  • Unknown Directx Error

    Hi there,

Recently I have been experiencing problems while playing Starcraft 2. During the game my screen will start to artifact and than my computer will restart. I have tried several different drivers, Reformatted, monitored all my temperatures bought a new heatsink for my cpu, and no results I ran the BurnInTest 7.0 and it failed the 3d test due to "Error initializing DirectX device" and "Unknown DirectX error". I wish i could figure this out.

    My system specs:

I would suspect your Graphics card device driver or hardware is failing causing Windows to crash. I would make sure this driver is updated and if possible try a different video card.

I would set Windows to not automatically restart on failure so you can see the Blue Screen Of Death diagnostic screen as this often shows the device driver in question:
Control panel->System->Advanced tab, Startup and recovery, Settings, Uncheck "Automatically restart".

You should check the system event log for the crash event - this may tell you something useful.

If you know how to analyze the Windows\memory.dmp file, I would look at the stack trace in this. If not and it is not enormous, then you can email it to us and I can take a look. Our email address is here:

Thanks for your help! I have tried my old 8800gt which use to work. and i had the same issue although i never ran that through BurnInTest.

Next time it happens i will send you my memory.dmp file.

      Thanks,

      Ross

Specifically for the unknown DirectX error reported in BurnInTest, you can email us a level 2 trace file of the test run showing the error and we will have a look at it for clues. A level 2 activity trace file is configured in Preferensces->Logging.

Also, as mentioned I would check for clues as follows - what did these tell you about the system crash:

Control panel->System->Advanced tab, Startup and recovery, Settings, Uncheck "Automatically restart".
