    Random hard drive errors? -Access privileges [SOLVED]

    Hello,

    I recently did a 48 hour test with BurnInTest running (it would run for one hour, exit, and my script would call it again) while the DUT was getting temperature cycled. I ran into two types of errors:

    Test file could not be re-opened. (3 times)
    Test file could not be created. Check access privileges. (1 time)

    I don't think it's a disk or permission/privilege error since the majority of the tests were working just fine. Thoughts? Since the CPU was operating at 100%, could that have contributed?

    I would normally test it again using only the disk test, but we are using an outside lab for the temperature chamber. I'm basically on their schedule.

    The disk shouldn't fail just because the CPU is under load.
    I think it is more likely that either there are device driver bugs or the hardware really is bad.

    The error messages that come back from the operating system are pretty general. So you can't read too much into the actual messages if it is a situation where you are for example seeing random failure on the SATA bus.

    Like you suggested, I would do a couple more runs.
    Try just the disk test by itself.
    Try the test with the same settings without temperature cycling.

      So I tested two different units at room temp this time. One of them had the same settings (CPU, RAM, graphics, disk [default test mode]) and the other had just the disk test.

      I looked back through the errors and found that only the random data pattern, with random seeking was causing issues. So I included only the random setting in the disk only test. Sure enough, I found four more errors from it. The multiple test unit hasn't recorded a single error yet.

      So I believe it's this section of the disk test that is causing issues. Does the program use anything different to write/read the test file for this specific mode? I'm trying a different hard drive but using the same drivers.

      If it helps at all, I'm using an industrial grade SSD.

        Are all of the errors the same?
        Do you have any 3rd party software that might be holding files open (e.g. Anti-virus software)?

          Yeah I saw both of those errors. 2 for the first error, and 2 for the second.

          The unit ran eTrustITM when the errors were received. I turned it off and began the testing again to see if that makes any difference.

          Edit: With the anti-virus turned off, I still received the error.

            I've tried a different brand for the hard drive. I'm now using a Western Digital 64 GB SSD sample. I've also turned down the file size to 1%. When I did this, I saw a lot more errors, presumably since the amount of files to write/read from increased.

            Is there any possibility that the random data with random seek is faulty for any reason? I'm at a loss as to what it could be. Any guidance will be appreciated.

              Still think it is likely there is some other software running on this system which is coming in and locking the files on the disk.

              Any chance you can repeat the test with a clean install of Win7?

              The other thing you could try would be run Microsoft's Process Monitor and see what other processes on the system are accessing these file.

                Well that was an interesting morning. Spent a few hours glaring at the process monitor log.

                It looks like the anti virus software was indeed the culprit. I only saw the AV and the bit.exe touching those files. I'm not sure why the AV was still running when I'm pretty sure I closed it. Judging from the log, it just looks like the timing was off by 0.2 seconds. I'll repeat it with it really closed this time.                   We have done a lot of testing of anti-virus products.

                  eTrustITM is an older solution from CA (who aren't even in the Antivirus business anymore). I am not surprised at all that 1) The product doesn't disable or uninstall cleanly. 2) The product interferes with the normal operation of the computer.
