New Computer, having Question!

I want to buy a new computer and I'm having some little questions to make sure I'm making the right choice. I want to upgrade my old one with some pieces. I already have a 700W power supply and a Radeon 4870.

My old spec was:

Intel Core 2 2,13GHz
Radeon 4870
P5E motherboard
2Go of RAM

Some of new games are hard to play with that config... I would like to change the motherboard, the processor, the ram and maybe the power supply if needed. I know that some motherboard today need a bigger case.. And beside 1000$ - 1600$

What model Core 2 did you have?
The Core i7 is the only sensible upgrade from the Core 2. But they are still expensive.
