Driver version naming convention?

Random question and I'm not sure where else to ask it since google isn't being much help, but does anyone know what the driver version numbering means?

Like for Nvidia it's 8.16.11.xxxx & for ATI it's 8.732.0.0?

Since these don't represent the released names I was just curious.

Someone might have an idea. But both nVidia and AMD (ATI) run forums on their respective sites. If you needed anything more than the obvious answer, that they are just incremental numbers, I would suggest posting on their sites.
