AMD A10 APUS, how are they benchmarked? Only as CPU or with the IGP too?

  • AMD A10 APUS, how are they benchmarked? Only as CPU or with the IGP too?

    Hi. I need to know how the AMD A10-5700 APU (and all other APUs) are being benchmarked. APUs have IGP, so does it take part in the whole results, or the APUs are being benchmarked ONLY as CPUs?

    The CPU tests suite only loads the CPU. The GPU isn't important.

    The 3D tests tend to be dependent on both the CPU and the GPU.

      So, the final score for the AMD A10-5700 APU (and every CPU with IGP) is taken from the CPU tests only, not the whole system, right?

        Depends what number you are referring to as the 'final score'.

        The CPU tests suite which generates the CPUMark score is only dependant on the CPU.

If you then compare the AMD A10-5700 APU (4cores/4treads @ 3.4ghz, score 6830), the top APU, with Intel Core i7 990X @ 3.47GHz (6 core, score 10531), the top i7, its happen this: the i7 has 1.5x the core count of A10. If I multiply that diferrence to the score, 1.5 x 6830 = 10245, we see that the APU has almost the same performance as i7. Of cource this isnt a compare at single-core level, but shows an overal image. That means that the new pilledriver cores are very good, according this speculation, and assuming that the scores are CPU ONLY. Whats your opinion in this?

            Yes these CPU scores only depend on the CPU, they are not dependant on the GPU.

            You are wrong however in saying the i7 990X is the top i7. It isn't. The Intel Core i7-3960X is the top i7 in the PT7 charts. This kind of invalidates the rest of your argument.

            We have PerformanceTest V8 in beta test. One of the PT8 tests is a single threaded test. Results collected to date show the following single threaded performance. Best CPU is at the top.

              Acording to this chart, the pilledriver is lower than phenom? In single-thread all must have the same clock speed..

                  Don't know what you mean. CPUs are sold at different clock speeds. Even if you wanted to overclock or underclock all CPUs to a common speed it wouldn't be technically possible to match the speed of all available CPUs.

In this site, at the home page I get this: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/ At the high end I looked the APU and made this speculation. Exluding the xeons, the top was the Intel Core i7 990X @ 3.47GHz. Do I miss something???

                      I don't know why you would think they 'must' be at any frequency, except the frequency they were designed to run at.

                        I agree, that is extremely surprising.

                        I mean, how can the Core i7-2760QM be doing so well? It's only running at 2.40GHz, and it's a mobile processor. How can it possibly be doing just as well as a 3.4 GHz core i3?

                        Are we sure these results are accurate, or could some kind of a glitch be inflating the numbers?

                          Nevermind. They have a base clock of only 2.4 Ghz, but they have a turbo clock of 3.5 Ghz, which would explain the impressive speed.

                            Yes the high turbo in single thread explains it.
                            Makes me wonder how these laptops would do if the outside environment was warm (e.g. 30C) and you ran the mobile CPU at full load for 10min. My guess is that they would overheat and then throttle themselves down.

                            Also makes we wonder if the difference between a mobile and desktop CPU will disappear (it is already a bit of a grey area). No reason they couldn't use the same CPU in both desktops and laptops, but in desktops you can have better cooling and run them at higher clock speeds.
