Hi David, thanks for your excellent website. I have learnt a lot from lurking here over the past year or so, but now I have a question of my own. Should I get 1 240 G ssd or get 2 smaller ones, so windows on C, and software on D, so they have a channel each? I don't think I can afford/justify 2 240's.

1 ssd or 2?

With 2 drives there are 2 options, stripping or separate volumes. But in either case I would get 1 drive. The reason is that,
- 1 new SSD should already be plenty fast, only rarely would you notice the speed difference in normal use.
- Stripping will double your chance of loosing all your data in the event of a failure (this probably the major point against stripping for me)
- Many disk tools won't work with RAID drives. e.g. maybe even the tool to update the drive's firmware
- A bit of extra hassle getting it setup initially
- Probably near double the power usage & heat (but this isn't much for a SSD).
- 2 x 120GB drives will cost slightly more than 1 x 240 drive
- Some programs don't like being moved between C:\ and D:\. For example STEAM (by default) will only install on C:\. Windows itself won't use 120GB. So you'll end up using C:\ for other stuff anyway.
But to be honest, none of the above is a very strong argument. Unless you are a heavy user of disk based tasks I don't think you'd notice the difference.

Thanks
Thanks for your quick reply David.
I was't thinking of raid, that would be a bit too adventurous for me.
In the past I have used seperate drives for windows, other software, temp scratch files, and data, so up to 4 drives. (for audio workstation)
