As a general rule the latest drivers are better. But there have been many instances where the new drivers have newly introduced bugs, and the old drivers are a better option.

New drivers are released mainly to support new games and new hardware. If you are only playing the old games on old video card, then you might find there is no need to upgrade.

I'm running an old GPU (nvidia 9600 GT) and recently I discovered that somehow it runs slower than the previous version of nvidia driver. Currently i'm using nvidia 340.52. So is latest driver always the best? Thanks before.
