  • Disk Checkup Help files

Just installed Disk Checkup and the help file pages do not display.
All that shows are simulated web pages with the title:
    The page cannot be displayed

    Any suggestions?

Microsoft have totally screwed up the correct functioning of help files. The .chm help file format uses Internet Explorer to display the content, and recent patches to IE have partially broken help files.

It seems that .CHM files will no longer work from a network drive. But if you copy them locally it can solve the problem. In addition there are a couple of other possible issues that Microsoft has been kind enough to burden us with.

Check that the path to your DISKCHECKUP.chm does not contain any hashes ('#'). For example, if you have unzipped diskcheckup.zip onto your desktop's folder "C:\Documents and Settings\user\Desktop\temp#\DiskCheckup", then you will get an error saying the page could not be displayed. Removing the 'hash' should do the job.

    More details are here:

If the above does not solve the problem, right-click and go to "Properties". Check "Unblock" (Note: If the file is already unblocked, this check box is not there).

Lastly, it could be XP(SP2)'s security features that is not allowing you to open the .chm files. .chm files are compiled HTML files and requires ActiveX control to display the pages. The above article have a few suggestions on how to get around that. Bear in mind that whatever security features that you changed, it could compromise the security of your computer.

Going forward, DiskCheckup will be released with browser-based HTML help files (not .chm with the embeded Active X table of contents). That should eliminate this problem.
