  • Newer CPU with less frequency than an older one?

    Hi

I know nothing about hardware so maybe it's a dumb question.
I'm looking for a laptop replacement, and I basically want an upgrade, not necessarily huge, but still.
    Currently I have a Ryzen 9 5900HX. I'm eyeing a laptop with i7 14650HX, but with an option for 14900HX.
When I compare my Ryzen 9 5900HX to the 14650HX, the Intel seems better (between 10 and 15% better). But the base frequency is way lower.
I know it's important, but also that it probably doesn't say the whole story.
But is there a reason why 2 CPUs have such a difference, with the one with the lower frequency being rated as better? I think I've seen other examples over the past couple of days. Is it just the evolution of it that makes it that despite the much lower frequency, it's still better?

    Thanks

Base clock speed don't mean much anymore. Many other factors effect performance.
(The Pentium 4 running at 3.8Ghz came out in 2008. While 3.8Ghz is a pretty reasonable clock speed, the performance of the Pentium 4 is rubbish compared to modern CPUs)

The Ryzen 9 5900HX was an OK CPU. You might not notice the upgrade much.

What you might notice is improvements in the GPU, SSD & Wifi over the last few years.
