  • Display/GPU sleeps?

I finished a new build last week. This is mainly for gaming and some light work.

I tested the rig with Prime95 for a few hours and I didn't get any errors.

So far in Windows I haven't experienced any errors, but in some games I have experienced some crashes although it has been VERY rare. That said I would like to test my RAM for a few hours/passes with MemTest. The problem is that for some reason either my display or my GPU is going to sleep (or at least it looks that way) and when I come back to see the results the display is off. If I turn it on or move my mouse or press my keyboard nothing happens, it eventually goes to sleep again (although my keyboard/mouse seem to have power). If I reboot my system comes up again normally.

    This is the build

    ASUS Maximus VIII Formula
    i7 6700k (at stock)
    32GB Corsair Dominator RAM (4x8GB)

The RAM is rated at 3333MHz (its OC by the MoBO using the XMP profile, it boots without issues ... after I upgraded to the latest BIOS). I also tried running the test with the default BIOS values (no OC), but that didn't help.

I have ran games at that speed and like I said I have gotten some crashes, but I'm not sure its even related to RAM, it could be the game/drivers (the GPU is a EVGA 1080 FTW).

Any ideas what could be going on with the test/display/GPU? Has anyone encountered this before?

I would like to make sure theres nothing wrong with the RAM.

The Intel 530 integrated in 6700K is going to sleep? Or AMD/NV PCI-e card?
Take out the AMD/NV card and retest. If the display still turns off, I would look in the UEFI/BIOS for GPU PowerManagemnt settings and turn them temporarily off for the test.

There is no sleep / power save function in MemTest86. The monitor should not turn off by itself.

How long does it run before the monitor turns itself off?
How is the monitor connected to the PC (e.g. Display port)?
      What model monitor is it?

It sounds a bit like this post reporting that once turned off the monitor wouldn't turn back on.

Do you have a different monitor to test with. Also, as suggested, testing the other video connection would also be interesting.

Its an ASUS PG278Q connected via DisplayPort. I guess its sort of the same issue on the post your linked to. I did connect the rig to my Samsung TV via HDMI and I didn't get the issue. This is my first time running MemTest on a rig with a display using Display Port so maybe its something normal under these circumstances.

I was able to run a few passes in stock speeds and then using the XMP profile without errors. When OC with XMP I get a note though... [Note] RAM may be vulnerable to high frequency row hammer bit flips.

Should I be worried? Is there something wrong with the RAM? Is this normal because of the OC?

Maybe the display issue is just a display port thing.

The row hammer warning / error is detailed here,

            Hello Guys and David.

I confirm the same happens to me using exactly the same monitor (ASUS PG278Q, it doesn't have any other input than Displayport). Is there any update on this DP issue?

Given that we have no other reports of this issue and your are both using the ASUS PG278Q monitor, it sounds like a bug in the monitor.

Are there any options in the Monitor's menus for controlling sleep, or power saving?
