  • MemTest86 detects too much reserved memory (I think)

I have an Acer Aspire ES1-521-23Z1 laptop with 6GB of RAM. MemTest correctly detects the 2 SIMMs of 2+4 GB. However, it reports that 1GB is reserved. When booting into Linux it also reports that total RAM is only 5GB. My graphics card is an AMD Radeon R2 which should not require an entire GB of RAM. Any ideas why I have 1GB of reserved memory?

    PS
I did a simple test of removing the 2GB SIMM and Linux reports total memory 3.5GB instead of 4GB. Is it possible that both SIMMs are faulty?

Likely it is the video card (and other hardware) that is reserving the RAM. Some of this might be adjustable in BIOS.

Very unlikely the RAM is reserved due to it being faulty.

I believe you are right I checked my GPU against a similar one and the other one reserves 1GB. Here it is:
