  • Memtest86 fails test6

    Hi fellow teks

I have recently tested a friends faulty graphics card in my pc since testing the gpu i had a boot looping issue.

I removed the ram cards and swapped them around my pc booted.

When playing pc games my pc would randomly reboot.

I have tested the ram with memtest and got the below results.
    stick 1 slot b1 - no errors
    Stick 2 slot b1 - no errors

    Stick 1 slot b2 - errors on test 6
    stick 2 slot b2 - errors on test 8

Bot sticks slot b1 and b2 - errors on test 6

I have uploaded pictures of results.

Please advise if this is a psu fault as the psu is an old 750watt

    Mobo ram slot

    Ram fault.

    Pc specs
    I7 9700k
    Msi z390 pro carbon
    Vengeance 2666mhz xmp 2x16gb
Aprox 8 years old 750w psu
    rtx 2060

Would have been nice to see the actual errors and not just the error count.

Unlikely the problem is due to the PSU. Maybe both slot and RAM are marginal.

The Msi z390 pro carbon has 4 RAM slots, can you try running the machine off the currently unused slots (A1 & B1). The manual might have said to use A2 & B2 first, but it should still work. (A1 & A2 will probably also work, but in single channel mode).

I ran the test again with both cards.

        A1 and A2

This time i got 0 errors.

Does this mean the issue is intermittent as i need to know what to send back as the ram cpu and board are all on warranty.

          My apologies for the confusion.
i mixed the ram info up i mean a2 and b2

          The correct info is

          Stick 1 slot a2 - no errors
          Stick 2 slot a2 - no errors

          Stick 1 slot b2 - errors on test 6
          stick 2 slot b2 - errors on test 8

Bot sticks slot a2 and b2 - errors on test 6

I am running the test now on a1 and b1

As per your reccomended test i have run the test. A1 B1 slots were used.

It is unclear which screen shots were from which RAM sticks in which slots.

But maybe it doesn't matter. It looks like a single bit in error in a small range of addresses. So this does in fact look like a real RAM failure.
If it doesn't happen all the time then it might be just marginal (right on the edge of failure). And slightly higher voltages or slightly different timing in different slots gets it working more reliably.

Under clocking the RAM in BIOS might get it to be more stable. Otherwise I would be tempted to replace it.

Continuining to test each card in each slot individually and will continue to post feedback as i go.

Theres only somuch i can do in a day as im sure you know.

I will be sure to post all the test results with each test.
i should have card 1 fully tested by the time i am home from work tomorrow.

I thank you for your responses and assistance.

Hi david. Im not sure if you are still viewing this post.
based on the above results can i rule out a ram slot failure.

Please let me know when you can.

It would be unusual to have two stick fail at the same time, but I am still leaning towards the RAM being bad.

As mentioned above I would be tempted to replace the RAM and re-test (or borrow some from a friend for testing).
