Serial number is in the SPD data, which is in a small chip on the RAM stick.
The SPD data is read via the SMBus.

So if you have machine that has no SPD chip, or no SMBus connecting to the RAM, or a hidden (undocumented) SMBus, then you won't see the data.

In some cases we can add support if the problem is related to a new SMBus configuration.

I noticed that in the report sometimes memtest shows serial number of memory being tested and sometimes doesn't.

what is the reason and explanation for this?
