  • Could memtest86 6.1.0 suppout boot from PXE under UEFI?

    Hi there,

My laptop can install OS via PXE and I want to know if memtest86 support PXE boot via LAN.
So I can Pre-test my memory sticks before installing OS.
If it can do, that is very convenient. how do it work.

My laptop support Ipv4,IPV6,uefi ,legacy ,CSM and I have a windows server PC.
    thanks

    Jesse

We haven't tried booting via PXE before, but theoretically it should be possible.

    See this thread here:
    http://www.passmark.com/forum/showth...boot-Memtest86

UPDATE: This is now possible in MemTest86 V7 (currently in beta release)

        Hi keith:

I have tried any method I could, but it still can't booting via PXE under UEFI mode.

The elilo setting on PXE server, I can found two files in other OS setting (vmliunz and initrd.img), these files can make the UEFI booting successfully, but I can't see them in Memtest86-6.1.0.iso.

Could you provided another way to make the function work?

vmlinuz and initrd.img are for Linux booting, so they aren't needed in MemTest86.

We haven't tested PXE booting ourselves but it seems that you just need to configure the server to point to the correct EFI binary (eg. BOOTX64.efi in the MemTest86 images)

            Hi keith:

Thank you for your answer, I'll try it again.

When I try booting MemTes86 (BOOTX64.efi) over UEFI network boot I just get a blank screen with no text output after MemTest86 has loaded over the network. Is this because systems (I've tried on a few different boards over the last few months) tend to freeze if they can't write the log file? I get the same freeze on a usb stick if I remove it during Memtest86 hardware detection.

I've tested with loading Memtest86's BOOTX64.efi direct from dhcp (based on these instructions: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US...pxe-dhcpd.html), and also via Ubuntu's uefi network boot build of grub. With both, watching the network packets shows BOOTX64.efi loading from the network then the screen just goes blank and doesn't go any further. I waited a few minutes just to be sure it wasn't taking a while to load as well.

We have sent you details of a private build to try:

MemTest86 will output some text on the screen on startup so that we can determine if the binary was successfully loaded.

This worked for me. Tried it on an HP DL380 Gen9 and a Dell R210.

                    Here's a video.

Not sure yet how to load it through a pxe menu, but it loads ok if thats the only thing you want to pxe boot.

The test build also worked for me loading from our ueif grub network boot menu. I was able to fully use memtest just like when I load from usb stick.

Hi guys, I´m trying to run the following software "Aomei PXE BOOT TOOL", but had the same problem using the .ISO format to run with UEFI mode.
I used the 6.3.0 Memtest Pro and 7.0.0 Beta 1 without sucess.
The software only runs ISO image and .WIM image.

Is it possible for PASSMARK supply me a .WIM for testing in UEFI mode?

We're not familiar with "Aomei PXE BOOT TOOL" but most (if not all) PXE servers that support UEFI should allow you to specify .efi files as the boot image. Client machines that support PXE UEFI boot must be able to boot .efi binary files.

See the following page on setting up network boot of MemTest86:

                            "mt86.cfg" parameters isn´t working!

Thanks for the support. I succeeded using TFTPD with UEFI on Memtest 6.3.0 and Memtest 7.0.0 Beta 1.

But now I´m with another issue about mt86.cfg.

Regarding Page 09 from GUIDE´s PASSMARK:
"The configuration file (mt86.cfg) located in the TFTP root directory can be used to specify the test parameters that the client machines shall use when running MemTest86."

Using TFTPD and “BOOTX64.efi”, I cannot use "mt86.cfg" parameters.

Is there any configuration that I have to do?

                            Thanks in advance.

                            Best Regards,

Are you using v6.3 or v7?

Only MemTest86 v7 supports using the configuration file with PXE boot.
