  • Dimm or slot

    Hi,

I did a MemTest on my system i7 930 on a Msi X58 Pro with 6x 2 Gb dimm's, because my system gave BSODs way to many.

The results, see attachement, lowest error address 5254 Mb, highest error address 6911 Mb.

But I don't know what the problem is dimm or slot.
If it is numbered from 1 to 6, like:
    dimm start end
    1 1 2048
    2 2049 4096
    3 4097 6144
    4 6145 8192
    5 8193 10240
    6 10241 12288
then it would be: remove dimm module 3 and 4; same slot??.

    But if it is like
    slot start end
    A0 1 2048
    B0 2049 4096
    C0 4097 6144
    A1 6145 8192
    B1 8193 10240
    C1 10241 12288
then it would be: dimm module on C0 and A1; not same slot.

    Thanx in advance.

    Greetings,

Unfortunately, the decoding of memory addresses -> physical slot number is more complex in real life (interleaving, swizzling by the memory controller) so it is difficult to determine the physical DIMM from the memory address. Best bet is to test each DIMM one-by-one (or split into 2 groups and work your way down) to find the problem module.

Having said that, in the Pro release of the software there is the ADDR2CHBITS field in the configuration file, which allows the user to determine the memory channel in use if the addressing scheme is known. The scheme usually isn't publicly documented however.

I use 6 Gb at the moment. I removed the upper 6 Gb and replaced slot C0 with (I thought) a good DIMM.
I checked with MemTest again and didn't find any errors. System looks stable now.

So in my case the memory map was:
      But if it is like
      slot start end
      A0 1 2048
      B0 2049 4096
      C0 4097 6144
      A1 6145 8192
      B1 8193 10240
      C1 10241 12288

So thanx for the great software.
