  • I nan't run memtest86 USB WinXP

    Hi, PC noob here.

I would like to test my ram with memtest86 with a USB stick with a WINXP SP3 PC. I've tried downloading and extracting both Memtest86+ USB Installer.exe and imageUSB.exe.

Memtest86+ USB Installer seems to have worked as the USB is recognized as MULTIBOOT (F: ) in My Computer. ImageUSB.exe completes the img burn but shows up as just (F: ) in My Computer. Both times I selected reformat USB in the installer.

I don't have an optical drive for this computer so I would like to use USB.

I restarted the PC with the USB stick still in the USB 2.0 port and hit F1 to go into the Phoenix awardbios cmos setup utility.

    Quick Boot = Disabled
    Boot from other drive: Disabled

I went into bios features and boot sequence.

    1st Boot Sequence = Removable
2nd Boot Sequence = Hard Disk

Removable Device Priority = USB-ZIP0 : USB DISK 2.0 PMAP or Floppy Disk
(I chose USB-ZIP0 by pressing + so USB was above Floppy Disk)
Hard Disk Boot Priority = Ch3M. :WD2500JS-00NCB1 or Bootable Add-In Cards
    (I chose the HDD Ch3M)

    I exit bios and saved.

I hit F8 to bring up the Boot Menu.

It gave me two options. Removable or Hard Disk.

Hard Disk has either Ch3M. :WD2500JS-00NCB1 or Bootable Add-In Cards.
Removable has either Floppy Disk or USB-ZIP0 : USB DISK 2.0 PMAP.

I chose USB-ZIP0 and hit enter, but it loads Windows instead.

I've tried disconnecting the SATA cable for the HDD but I get an error instead.

What might I doing wrong here? Thanks

Are you using MemTest86 or MemTest86+ (not our product). The naming is similar but they are maintained entirely separately, so if you are using MemTest86+ you should contact them directly.

Our MemTest86 packages don't have any files named "Memtest86+ USB Installer.exe". However, they do include "imageUSB.exe" for burning the image on USB.

In ImageUSB, you need to select "Write image to USB drive" to create the MemTest86 Boot USB.

If your system supports UEFI, you should be able to boot MemTest86 v6. Otherwise, your system will boot the older MemTest86 v4. See this page for details.

      Thanks,

I don't think my system supports UEFI. The motherboard is a old MSI MS 7324.

I tried again with ImageUSB and rebooted but it loaded Windows again.

Is the USB supposed to be renamed after burning memtest86 onto it? My USB is still named Removable Disk (F: ) in My Computer after the burn.

I'll buy another USB and retry.

According to the log, the creation of the MemTest86 USB Flash Drive was successful. What you need to do is to set your boot order in BIOS or choose your boot device at startup to be the USB Flash drive. See http://www.memtest86.com/technical.htm#boot
