  • Memtest Dual Boot with Windows 10

    Hi all,
Seeking advice from forum on how I can create a dual boot scenario with Windows 10 and Memtest86 on the same hard drive (SSD).
Not using UEFI but legacy booting with MBR's
Thought maybe I could use Microsoft's "bcdedit" boot manager editor but not sure.
Looking for ideas on how I can make this happen.
    Thanks all appreciate you help

Current MemTest86 release is UEFI only.
Some ASUS motherboards have Memtest86 build directly into BIOS.

      David,
Thanks for getting back. The work got put on back burner but now it's back on.
So I'm using UEFI and will using the latest version on MemTest.
How do I go about creating another boot partition on my Windows 10 or 11 system SSD and then creating a dual boot with Memtest?

The closest thing we have looked at was getting MemTest86 to work with Grub for a Linux boot menu,

Nobody as ever asked for MemTest86 & Win10 dual boot from a fixed internal drive before. So we have never looked at it.

          Thanks David,
can you tell me which O/S and bootloader is used when creating the USB thumbdrive bootable MEMTEST version

I'm thinking I could improvise the MEMTEST with GRUB solution from you link above and use BCDEDIT instead (for windows)

MemTest86 doesn't use an operating system. It runs directly on the UEFI BIOS.
(but to be fair modern UEFI BIOSs are getting so complex that they are starting to look like a mini operating system).

                I've been doing some reading.

Looks to me that windows bootloader/manager can only dual boot with other windows O/S's

Stand corrected on my understanding. Please correct as you see fit.

So what you say about Memtest running just bootloader, then It might be good news as I hope i can still run it via windows boot loader (as it doesn't load an O/S)

We didn't really want to turn MemTest86 into a bootloader.
It hasn't been something people have been requesting.

There are also secure boot code signing issues. Microsoft needs to sign code that runs from UEFI BIOS when secure boot is enabled.
They currently sign MemTest86 for us. This allows it to boot and do it's job of testing RAM. I suspect Microsoft might give us a lot of grief if MemTest86 was turned into bootloader code (potentially allowing non secure code to load).
