  • [OSFMount] BSOD when copying a large file to a vmdk (physical emultation)

Using OSFMount V3.1 (1003) to mount in read+write a entire .vmdk image file created with VMWare Workstation 17.5.1 build-23298084 as an entire virtual disk (removable media) in physical disk emulation (HDD), when I'm trying to copy a large zip file (38 GBytes) to the mounted volume formatted in NTFS, after some times, I get a BSOD and after the reboot I can see the following :

    25/08/2024 21:53 81.461.248 Windows Server 2019-2.vmdk
    25/08/2024 23:05 6.631.718.912 Windows Server 2019-2.vmdk.osfdelta.raw

OSFMount doesn't support writing to VMDK disk images. See the table on this page.
    https://www.osforensics.com/tools/mo...sk-images.html

But nonetheless, it shouldn't crash either.

So I suspect you are using write cache. Write cache mode preserves the data of the original image file by storing all writes to a separate write-cache file (.osfdelta). So none of your writes will effect the VMDK image.

How much free disk space do you have for the delta file?
