  • Best CPU for a Single Thread

I'm looking to upgrade a server who's main function is to run a single threaded application. I'm assuming that an i3 would perform this function almost as well as an i5 or i7. This is based on the assumption that the i5s and i7s score higher on this site primarily because of their multiple cores and to a lesser extent because of their larger caches. Are these assumptions correct? And is there a way to compare single core performance?

PerformanceTest V8 (currently in beta release) includes a new single threaded test.

The preliminary results we are getting in show the follow CPUs perform the best in single threading. The best CPUs are at the top of the list. The 2nd column is the score.

Once PT8 is released we'll be making a public chart available and covering more CPUs than are in the list above.

So yes, an i3-2130 is as good as most of the i5 CPUs and almost as good as the high end i7s. The i3-2130 is also one of the best in terms of (single threaded) performance per $. The AMD FX-4100 is also a very good choice for performance per $.

        No problem.

Really highlights what a problem AMD has. The AMD FX-8120 Eight-Core gets whipped by the 2 core i3-2130.
