  • GTX 770 and AMD FirePro W5000 on the same build

    Hello,
I am building a machine for games and to work with CAD/CAE like SolidWorks and Catia.
This is what I have in mind:

    Intel Core i7-3930K 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor
Be Quiet DARK ROCK 2 57.9 CFM Fluid Dynamic Bearing CPU Cooler
    ASRock X79 Extreme6 ATX LGA2011 Motherboard
    Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Samsung 840 Pro Series 256GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
    Western Digital WDBAAZ0010HNC-NRSN 1TB 7200RPM
    SeaSonic SS-750KM

And for the video cards I was wondering to put: (together, but not SLI or Crossfire - since is impossible)

AMD FirePro W5000 2GB --------------- for SolidWorks (since this is a certified video card for this application)
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 4GB ------ for games

    QUESTIONS:
    a) Is that combination possible?
    b) Can I install the drivers for both cards?
    c) How do I switch from one to another when I need to run either a game or SolidWorks?
    d) Is this ridiculous? (I mean, can the GTX deal with both stances of application with no hassles?)

Thanks guys, have a great week.

Don't know if it would work, as it isn't something we have tested.

In my opinion however you are asking for problems putting an AMD and nVidia video card in the same machine. I think a lot of software is coded on the assumption that there is one video card. Or coded to assume that if there is more than 1, then they are all identical cards, or in SLI mode.

(The exception to this is with on board video cards, but in this case you can disable the onboard card from BIOS, or switch cards using special software, see nVidia optimus)
