  • Want to do a little upgradingas

I want to do a little upgrading of a warrior of a PC.
It is an HP so out of the way i let you know that i cannot overclock the CPU. HP just doesnt allow it on their builts. I am maxed out on ram already at 12 gb, ddr3.
so knowing that i just want to get a few more years out of this workhorse that has served me so well for 10 years. I have the core i7-920 CPU. I am thinking to buy a used i7-960 for $100 to get the increase in speed. That along will get me 1000 points better on the cpu benchmark.

Then, upgrade my video card to a Radeon R9-290 for $200, which will give me a bump of around 4,000 basis point in the video benchmark.

Are those $300 worth it upgrading this old girl?

If you do upgrade the video card, check the PSU requirements first, and the PCI-E slots you have available.

My first upgrade for old PC is always the hard drive upgrade to a SSD.

A new CPU will give you 10% - 15% better CPU performance.
But a SSD might give a 5x speed improvement. Which is much more noticeable. Plus you can move the SSD to a new machine next year. But you can't move the CPU.
