  • AMD R9 390 & 390x benchmarks?

I see that these cards have just been appended to the old R9 290 & 290x benchmarks. Is this placeholder?

I know the card specs are similar but benchmarks from multiple sources online are showing that the 390's beat out the 290's consitently even at 1080p and edge out the 980 in 4k benchmarks.

So, I'm wondering what's up with these listings.

    Thank you.

These are effectively overclocked re-brands of the 290/290X, internally they use the same device ID for identification and as such PerformanceTest doesn't distinguish between them.

Previously some vendors already sold the 290 cards with an overclock almost matching the 390 releases (MSI released an R9 290X with a 30-40Mhz overclock) so the results from those would be almost the same as the new releases.

It's something we're planning to look at with the future release of PT9, likely using the AMD developer APIs to get a proper name for the AMD cards so we can split these re-branded cards into separate entities for our database.

Surely if able to differentiate for example between a GTX680 and a GTX770 which use the same exact gpu, memory amount, memory type, etc (sans some clock speed differences and gpu boost 2.0) for the most part, you shouldn't have THAT much difficulty differentiating between the new Radeon cards.

All R9 390xs will have 8gb memory, as will the R9 390s. The 300 series werent necessarily all rebrands, almost all have more memory or some minor tweaks just like the 770 and the 680 did, so why lump the AMD cards together like this but not the Nvidia cards? You guys DO know how to check how much video memory is present on a video card, right?

Yes it's certainly possible to have multiple levels of lookup tables to differentiate between the models with the same device IDs like this in some circumstances but it still won't fully solve the problem (there are 8GB R9290X's out there as well) and requires a lot more maintenance and updates.

We've asked AMD if there is an easier to maintain solution as it looks like even their own developer API currently doesn't have a way of returning the actual card name. If not then we will likely add a second level of lookup tables to separate cards based on their series name though again this isn't a perfect solution (eg Fury vs Fury X).
