Graphics scores w/ 8800gts is comparable to my 7600 gt ko

The 8800 had higher 3d mark, but the 7600 had higher 2d mark. I was hoping to increase my system's performance quite a bit, considering the price difference between the 8800 and the 7600 is about $200.
Could it be becaue teh 8800 is directx 10?

8800-889.4
7600-982

3D mark:
8800-1024
7600-524

CPU Athlon 6000
mobo: asus m2n-sli deluxe
ram: 4 gig ddr2 800 RAM
HDD: hitachi deskstar 320 gig, 16 mb cache
PSU: 500 w, raidmax psu
sony optiarc dvd-r/rw
gfx aforementioned
OS: Win XP

Direct X should not effect the 2D test. I think it is more likely to be a difference in the device drviers and how they work with the two cards.
