I just got a new computer after using a Dell Dimension 8300 with a Intel 4 3.20 MGz. Now I have a Dell Precision 490 with a Quad Core Xeon Proc E5320 - 1.86MGz. What is the comparison of the two? How much faster is the second versus the first? Does Quad Core mean four CPUs or what? Thanks.

You can compare the results in PerformanceTest and on the CPUBenchmark site, see,
Quad Core Xeon E5320
Intel Pentium 4 3.2Ghz
Quad core is like having 4 CPUs. Except the cores are all in the same chip and share some resources like the connection to RAM and cache.
When using software designed for multiple CPUs the new machine might be 2 to 4 times faster than the old.
