  • CD-ROM does not spin when tested

    Hi,
Using the CD/DVD Drive test on an NEC DVD/RW ND-3550A), I'm getting a low value on the Read Speed: 0.06 MB/sec = (0x CD).

The drive does not spin during this test. There is a commercial audio CD in the drive. I suspect I'm not running the test correctly.

I looked in the online help. I searched these forums and could not find posts (I tried CD, CD-ROM, and CDROM as search arguments).

    Any thoughts on what's awry?

    Thanks in advance.

    Bob

    Can you try
    1) Using Windows Explorer, copy all the files from the CD to your hard disk and see if it happens at a resonable speed
    2) Try with another CD ans post the results. e.g. the Windows installation CD

Do you happen to know if the CD has any copy protection on it?

      1) Copying a data CD containing jpegs (238 MB) works as expected.
      2) Using the same data CD, the CD spun for several seconds (1/2 a minute?) and the CD Read result was 3.39, a reasonable number.

I don't think the commercial CD has copy protection on it -- it plays fine in Windows Media Player and iTunes.

Looks like the performance check does not work with an audio CD.
