  • Pentium 3.2 Dual Core - underperforming

This was supposed to be a scream machine, but only scores 467.9.

My system: Pentium 3.2 gyg Dual core, Dual 74 gyg 10000 rpm WD Raptor drives, NVidia GeForce 6600 - pci express, with 2 gyg of ram.

Any suggestions??? I expected a much higher score.

There is nothing really wrong with the score. It is reasonable, but not extraordinary.

The CPU isn't the fastest. Dual Operons are better for example. Dual CPUs generally perform slightly better than dual core.

You can get higher 2D scores by turning off the XP visual display bells and whistles. It will look like Windows 2000 but run faster.

You could use RAID to improve the disk score. But this is expensive.

The GeForce 6600 isn't even close to being the fastest video card on the market. Especially when it isn't the 6600GT version. It is however, good value for money. There are half a dozen more expensive cards available that are faster.

You could use a CD with large files on it for the CD test. This would lift your result. (Lots of small files on a CD give a low result).

So overall I think you got a result that reflects your hardware & configuration.

The other moral of the story is that you need to spend a lot of money to have the fastest machine & then two weeks later you get knocked of the hill anyway,

I didn't get to the top of the hill.

Ok, so the video is just mediocre.
I still would have expected the Raptor drives to perform exceptionally well. These are supposed to be the Fastest ... according to WD's website.... 10000 rmp, 8meg cache, 1.5mb throughput. They don't seem to be performing at all. Drives are defragged frequently.

But, I've had this machine for 4 or 5 months now, so I don't expect to ever get to the top of the heap now.

Back to the Video, the MB only supports PCI express. Whats available there?

By the way David, thanks fo the quick reply. If your east of ME, what are you doing working on Christmas day?

Some better cards that come in PCI-E are
        6600GT
        Radeon X800XT
        6800
        Radeon X850XT PE
        Radeon X1800XT
        6800GT
        6800 Ultra
        7800GT
7800GTX <= This card gets the best result in PerformanceTest

Many of these cards can also be set up as dual cards in an SLI configuration.

As I said your HD scores looked OK. If you are really not happy with the result consider using two drives in a RAID configuration.

We are in Sydney, so we didn't do any work on Christamas day. But are doing a bit of other days.
