What are 'average' scores?..is this score good?

My overall score was 270.7 with an AMD XP2400+ cpu ,Windows XP pro,80GB 7200rpm 8MB buffer WD hard drive,512MB PC2100DDR ram and an ATI 8500DV 64MB video card. Just wondering...I'm happy with the performance of this pc but didn't know how this score compared with other testers.

The best way to analyse PerformanceTests scores is by comparing your results to other 'baselines'. You can download almost 700 baseline files from http://www.passmark.com/ftp/bl_pkg_v4.zip. You can view these baselines in PerformanceTest and compare your computer with similar systems on a test-by-test basis to see exactly how it shapes up. Note that the licensed version of PerformanceTest is required to view these baselines. (this is one of the advantages of purchasing the software)

At a rough guess, I'd say your score is about average for your computer spec, but it's hard to say for sure, without seeing your baseline and the results of each test. For example you may have scored especially high on the disk tests, but low on the graphics tests, thus giving an decent average result, but leaving room for improvement.

My scores :
Performance Test V4.0
Total Result = 303.6
Max Megaflops = 635.5

Now this runs very good. The only thing i am gonna change is the Mb RAM, will pull it up to max Gb.

Certainly a Godzilla machine and a high result...
It would be interesting to see what other users with similar systems have recorded...
PerformanceTest uses a weighting system to generate its scores and some components in particular are very difficult to rate because of the differences between the low end and the high end of what is both available on the market and still sitting around in PCs out there. For instance, there is such a huge variance in the performance of graphics adapters that care must be taken not to give stupidly massive scores to the top of the range cards. That said, a fast graphics adapter is becoming an increasingly more necessary component of todays computers - especially for the home user, so high results must be rewarded. Getting the happy medium isn't always easy.
It's also worth noting that high end server machines may not receive the high scores you'd expect - this is usually because such computers score low in the graphics tests which drag their overall rating down. Try to focus on the test results that matter most, such as the Maths, Disk and Memory tests.

my xp2700@ 2316 clocked performance test at 421 :P with 751 mflops. i have a radeon 9600/512 mb ddr2700 and 80g maxtor drive on windows xp home edition.

Now that version 5.0 of PerformanceTest is released, people should be careful to state if their result was with V4 or V5 of the software. The results between V4 and V4 wil vary from machine to machine.

For example, machines with hyperthreading and multiple CPUs will, in general, perform better in V5 becuase more of the code is multi-threaded and / or multi-process.
