  • Disappointing PerformanceTest results

    Hi,

I've just setup my new rig and ran some benchmarking tools, and i'm getting some rather poor results, especially regarding my RAM. I'm hoping someone can shed some light on why this is the case, or tell me I'm being overly optimistic on what my system can achieve!
(I have only had this system operational for about 12 hours, all drivers are up-to-date according to manufacturers websites)

System details: (all speeds @ stock, no OC)
    Gigabyte F2A85X-D3H
    AMD A10-5800K Black Edition @3.9Ghz
    Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2*8 @1600Mhz CL9
    Hiper 580W PSU
    WD Raptor 10Krpm 36.5GB HDD

I scored a PassMark of 1394.1 overall, but as you can see from the picture of the results, my RAM is significantly slower than the systems it is compared against. I know the HDD sucks and i'm not using a discrete GFX card, but surely that wouldn't effect my RAM performance?

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! if there is any other information i can provide just let me know.

    thanks,
    anthony

The AMD systems aren't returning results as good as the high end Intel systems.

There is more discussion on the issue here,
    http://www.passmark.com/forum/showth...am-performance

The Raptor HDD was a great drive in 2003 when it was released. But 10 years on, it ain't looking so hot.

And integrated graphics doesn't give good 3D results (but the situation is improving each new generation).

hi David, thanks for the reply.

i had read the discussion you linked to prior to posting, but i thought that my results were a little too extreme to be solely a CPU issue.

i have borrowed a 500GB WD Caviar SATA II drive for my OS now, and the difference is significant (passMark now scores 1836). the change in drives also seems to have cured a few stability issues i was having. i think that Raptor may be forced into retirement. i'm not bothered about the 3D result, i won't be using this system for gaming.

but i am disheartened to see, as in the comparison in the image i have linked, that my RAM speeds are substantially lower than a system with "slower" RAM, the 8GB Corsair PC3-10600. Can that be explained by the difference between AMD and Intel CPU's?

Your RAM speed depends on the bus speed, the CPU, the RAM's specs and the speed you are running it at in BIOS.

        Compare these charts

Just as an update, i've OC'd this system (after adding a new CPU heatsink/fan) and got some much improved results.

i now have the CPU running at 4.5Ghz @1.4V and the RAM is running 2133Mhz 11-12-11-30 @ 1.5V. i haven't touched the NB or the GPU frequency/voltage.

The upshot is that the PassMark is up to 2438.6 which is up from 1836 at stock speeds.
