  • PerformanceTest V11 2D 3D crash with Nvidia Smooth Motion enabled

    Backgound:
    According to NVIDIA, "Smooth Motion is a new driver-based AI model that delivers smoother gameplay by inferring an additional frame between two rendered frames. For games without DLSS Frame Generation, NVIDIA Smooth Motion is a new option for enhancing your experience on GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs."

    Unfortunately it can also crash games & apps.

    Hardware:
    GeForce RTX 4000/5000 series

    Symptoms:
    These tests within PerformanceTest cause a crash when Smooth Motion is enabled:
    2D Graphics: Image Filters
    2D Graphics: Image Rendering
    2D Graphics: Direct 2D SVG
    3D Graphics: DirectX 10

    Analysis of multiple crash dumps & stack traces always showed a crash in d3d11.dll. (The DirectX 11, graphics library DLL):
    Code:
    d3d11!C10and11Resource<ID3D11Texture2D1,ID3D10Texture2D>::GetType
    d2d1!DrawingContext::CreateBitmapFromDxgiSurface+0x48d
    d2d1!D2DDeviceContextBase<ID2D1DeviceContext7,ID2D 1DeviceContext7,null_type>::CreateBitmapFromDxgiSurface+0xee
    PerformanceTest64+0x27dd89
    Solution:
    Disable Smooth Motion when running PerformanceTest

    We believe at this point there is a device driver bug in the nvidia software and we attempted top report the issue to them.

    We have had one similar report on a Lenovo Laptop with a NVIDIA RTX 3500 video card.

      Update: We reported the issue to nVidia. They don't care.
