any reason why my scores are abysmal? should i stick with 8?

You are probably frame rate limited by your monitors refresh rate (vsync).
This can normally be turned off in your video card device driver settings.

but performance test 8 works just fine, not sure why. i'll try turning off vsync in nvidia controls
