  • 3D benchmark doesn't run on Vista

    Hi there,

    I have:
    -Passmark Performance Test 6.0 (1001)
    -Windows Vista build 6000
-ATI Rage XL (chip soldered on server motherboard), 8MB VRAM.

I had XP SP2 running just fine with Passmark PT 6.0 working just fine.

After moving to Vista, I can no longer run the 3D benchmark. I get a dialogue that reads:

    -------------------------------------------------------------------
    "Warning: nothing will be rendered."

"The reference rendering device was selected, but your computer only has a reduced-functionality reference device installed. Please ensure that the most recent device driver for your graphics adapter is correctly installed".
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

According to Control Panel, I'm running:

RAGE XL PCI Family (Microsoft Corporation)
    Driver provider: ATI
    Driver Date: 6/21/2006
    Driver version: 6.0.6000.16386
    digital signer: microsoft windows

I went to ATI/AMD page and there's no "new driver" available for RAGE XL server chipset.

Any ideas?. I cannot install DirectX 9.0c as Vista supposedly includes DirectX 10.

That message about the "reference rendering device" means that the device driver does not support 3D hardware acceleration (or it is turned off).

It is not really a Vista issue, as PerformanceTest runs V6.1 fine on Vista if your hardware supports Vista.

You might try using the dxdiag.exe utility that comes with DirectX to turn on 3D acceleration (if available with your driver).
