  • Does WirelessMon work on Vista

I have a network in which I have some of the computers running Vista and eventually I will have all of them running Vista the network is wireless but the wireless management of Vista is not what I expected.
    Thanks,
    Bertle

Some initial testing with Vista shows WirelessMon will work in a limited capacity in the current build and we could connect to an open network without any trouble.

You will need to be running with Administrator privileges or you will get security warnings. You will also need to manually disable the "WLAN Autoconfig" service or you will receive a warning about not being able to disable the WZC service.

It is also likely you will get the "Cannot find corresponding network counters" message so some statistics will be unavailable.

We are planning to do some more testing and release a Vista version in a few months.

About disabling wlan service on vista

I did as you wrote and disabled the wlan service manually everything worked fine until I restarted the computer after that wirelessmon could not see my wireless card. On the machine I used for the test the wireless card is a intel 2200bg mini pci. Can you tell me what I need to do.
      Thanks,
      bertle

This is most likely because the service was restarted when windows restarted. If you don't want the service to start automatically you will need to double click on it and change the startup type to manual. This will stop Vista from restarting the service when it reboots, of course it will also mean you won't be able to manage your wireless connections with vista while it is off.We are hoping to turn this service off when WirelessMon is started and restart it when WirelessMon exists in much the same way that it is done in the current version of WirelessMon for the WZC.

            Vista RTM

I am running Vista Ultimate RTM (build 6000) on a Dell D620 with an Intel Pro/Wireless 3945 ABG and I can't get WirelessMon to work. Anyone else have any luck.

Could you please post some details as to how it isn't working, eg error messages, crash addresses if they are present, what sort of user account you were using when you installed and ran it etc.

There is a new build of WirelessMon available from http://www.passmark.com/ftp/wirelessmon2.0.1009-c.exe that should automatically stop/start the WLAN Autoconfig service as well as prompting WirelessMon to run in the elevated administrator mode that it is required to run correctly. It should also fix the "Cannot find corresponding network counters" problem occuring in Vista.

Please try this version and let me know how it goes.

                    Vista support

Running Vista RTM and ver 2.0.1009.
The program starts fine with no error messages, however no APs or any info is listed.

Is there any vendor specific software running in the background that controls your network card, or another program that accesses the network card like Netstumbler?

Could you also please check that the WLAN Autoconfig service has been correctly shut down.

No vendor specific software running (pretty clean build at the moment) certainly nothing like NetStumbler. Been through all the services, WLAN is stopped and nothing else appears to be running that would interact with the wireless card.
Wirelessmon is running with admin priviledges and even tried running in various compatability modes all with the same affect. Program starts fine with no error messages and an empty screen (no APs displayed).
Manually start WLAN and all the APs come flooding back under the Vista wireless panel.

Is there any indication that your wireless card's radio is turned on/off? If you have Intel ProSet running in the system tray and right click on it there should be 2 options showing the state of the card (Enable Radio / Disable radio).

The radio card is enabled. As soon as WirelessMon is exited the standard list of APs re-appear under the Vista GUI.
Have tried this program on another RTM Vista machine which has a clean build (different WiFi card though still Intel based) with exactly the same issue.
On the opening screen 0 access points detected (should be at least 4), do get some figures under the Statistics and IP connection tabs but nothing else. A have a professional license key which I've used in each case. The machines are both laptops Toshiba M200 and M5.

                            Cheers,
                            Paul.

We're currently installing another version of Vista on a laptop here, so we will have a business and ultimate install to test against. Which particular version of Vista are you using?
