My guess would be that the IDE controller doesn't support SMART (or its device driver doesn't).

Is is really old IDE or is it SATA?
Is the controller on the motherboard or a separate PCI/PCI-E card.
Or is it something like a USB to IDE converter?

It would be better if you didn't guess and actually checked what the situation is and what hardware is being used.

As far as I know there is no such thing as"NVDIA cForce". At least I couldn't find any information about it. Maybe you are confused?

But regardless, if it doesn't work and SMART compatibility is claimed it is most likely a device driver issue.

is it possible to take in
account the differentiate of HDD and SSD SMART monitoring?

Diskcheckup can report if the drive is a SSD.

Check the RPM of the drive (media rotation rate field).

Are you by chance using the Nvidia storage controller drivers? If so from my experience they are problematic. I would suggest using the native windows 7 storage controller driver if not already doing so and see what happens.

These messages aren't from any of our software. And they aren't SMART errors. They are just someone's interpretation of the SMART values.

I was under the impression that smart was not working correctly. I stand corrected.
