Drive not recognized

I have a brand new Western Digital hard drive and Diskcheckup doesn't read any smart attributes and where the drive name would normally display in the upper box it just shows "Disk 0" with a red box with a minus symbol in it. It doesn't read the disk manufacturer's ID name or number. What does this mean?

How is this drive connected to the motherboard? (USB, SATA, SCSI, etc...)?
What is the model number of the drive?

The drive is connected via a SATA cable to the motherboard internally. My original question related to a brand new hard drive I placed in a computer and sold to a client, so I don't any longer have access to that model number, but I have another computer in front of me that has the same issue and it is a Western Digital WD5000AAKS.

Some motherboard have a mix of normal SATA ports and RAID controller SATA ports.
What port are you using and what is the motherboard model?

Can you run DiskCheckup in debug mode and send us the log,
To do this you need to use the '-d' command line argument
(Debug mode is off by default).

From within the BIOS I just ran a Short Self-Test and it passed just fine.
GSmartControl describes the minus box as: send command failed. I'm not sure what that means or how to resolve it.

It is using a SATA port, not a RAID
The Motherboard is: MCP61PM - HM Rev. 1.0A

It seems that you have only posted part of the log, can you post the full log or e-mail it to us.

It may be that it is using a SCSI Disk Device driver, which doesn't support retrieval of SMART attributes.
