    There is the facility in at least the newer CPUs, server motherboards & UEFI to notify the operating system of ECC issues.

    For example there is the Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA). Which in Win7 will monitor memory pages with ECC errors and take them offline.

    ECC errors can also get logged to the Windows event log. Some BIOSs also have the ability to see ECC errors that have been logged.

    But if the RAM is bad, then it is bad. If memory pages are taken offline, then it makes the machine more resilient, but doesn't guarantee a graceful failure.

    I don't know what FreeBSD does in the case of ECC errors. Might just cause a MCA induced panic and shut the machine down.
