  • Score seems low for E6400 - 717.0

I think 717 bad for this new PC I just built?? Please help identify where I can improve performance. The whole PC seems sluggish half the time. I haven't even started overclocking yet.

    Motherboard is Evga 680i, E6400, 2GB Corsair, Evga 8800GTS, 500GB Maxtor SATA2

    Thanks for any help.

Hard drive read seems a bit slow. Did you run the test a few times to confirm this result.

      Drive speed

Make sure you have defraged your harddrive. You should be getting a read speed around 50 to 60 for a drive like that.

Also check out this sticky posted my the Passmark admin, it contains lots of useful tips on boosting performance.

I defragged and ran it 3 more times still getting slow sequetial reads in low 20s. Nothing running in background. No spyware.

        Disk - Sequential Read: 21.8
        Disk - Sequential Write: 60.8
        Disk - Random Seek + RW: 2.4

Do I have a lemon or what?

        Here are drive specs:

        Model: 7H500F0
        SATAII 3GB/s

        Thanks for all the help.

          Drive speed slow

Very good drive it is an Enterprise class drive from what I been reading.

A couple of things you can try make sure your motherboard drivers are up to date Nvidia has the latest drivers for yours here http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_winxp_9.53.html
if that does not solve the problem try the following.

Next thing you can do is to check the settings for the drive. Right click My Computer - Click Manage - then click on Device manager. look for IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers click on the + sign next to it.

Since yours is SATA try double clicking on Secondary IDE Channel and click on Advanced Settings, Look for Current Transfer Mode, one of them should say Ultra DMA mode 6 if it does not then under transfer mode make sure it says DMA if Available.

          let me know

I reinstalled the MB drivers to make sure. Still slow reads.

            Went to Device Manager:

Under Disk Drives it shows location of Maxtor 7H500F0 is Primary ATA Channel and driver date is Microsoft 7/1/2001 Version: 5.1.2535.0

Under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers I have the below:

NVIDIA nForce 590/570/550 Serial ATA Controller - Primary Channel tab
--- Serial ATA Generation 2-3G is Transfer mode
--- Let BIOS select transfer mode is checked
--- Enable read and write caching are both checked

            Primary IDE
            ---Device type - Auto detection
---Transfer mode - DMA if available
---Current Transfer mode -- Ultra DMA Mode 2
I can't change any of these settings

            Secondary IDE
            ---Device type - Auto detection
---Transfer mode - DMA if available
--- Current Transfer mode - Not Applicable

Everythings seems to checkout here. Any other ideas? I'm about to get another hard drive to test so I can help determine if it is motherboard or hard drive.

            Thanks.

Under the NVIDIA nForce 590/570/550 Serial ATA Controller - Primary Channel tab

Is there a speed test button there? if so press it and see what it says.

is there a checkbox for Enable Command Queuing? if there is uncheck it and reboot. try the test again.

You don't have RAID right just one SATA drive? also under the driver tab what is the date and version listed?

                Speed Test results:
                Theoretical limit: 300.0
                Burst Speed: 170.3
                Sustained speed: 68.0

Enable command queuing was unchecked. It's set to let BIOS select transfer mode. Enable read/write caching is checked

No RAID just one SATAII drive.

                  slow drive per

I seem to have found the same thing on another one of my computers with a nforce 4 chipset. Read speed is at 24.2 much slower than it should be it is used as a server. I solved a RAID read speed on my gaming system took me some time though.

I will work on what is the cause of this issue and post later.
